David admires the great landscape watercolourists such as Winslow Homer and Edward Wesson, as well as works by Australian and NZ artists, such as J.J.Hilder, Harold Herbert, Hans Heysen, RW Sturgess, Rita Angus.
David developed an interest in black and white photography at an early age, developing and printing his own pictures in a home darkroom. Later he studied and gained the Certificate of Photography at Sydney Tech in the 1980s.
The grainy atmospheric works of the Pictorialist photographers of the early 20th century have always appealed to David. For example, the works of Peter Henry Emerson and Léonard Misonne.
Looking to create similarly atmospheric and evocative images, David experimented with digital photography using grain and texture overlays, and then turned to watercolour.
"I found that watercolour had some similar properties, especially with the granulation effects of certain pigments, and I love the aerial perspective and atmosphere that can be achieved with watercolour"
